A very special show and album release
What: Tribute to J.A. Dino Deane – Out of Context Album release and The
Folding Space Conduction Ensemble.
When: Sunday, April 27th at 3pm
Where: The Outpost Performance Space, 210 Yale Blvd, SE, Albuquerque NM
The Folding Space Conduction Ensemble, based in Santa Fe, NM, explores
the Conduction Lexicon established by the late maestro Lawrence D.
“Butch” Morris which he passed on to the great J.A. “Dino” Deane. Dino,
who passed away in 2021, founded New Mexico’s Out of Context ensemble –
the longest lived and deepest developed Conduction ensemble ever
established. Carlos Santistevan, who played bass in and provided
electronics for Out of Context for over 10 years, was gifted a deep
knowledge and understanding of the works and legacy of Morris and Deane
during his tenure. Shortly before his passing, Dino entrusted the
archives of Out of Context to Santistevan, who has since digitized and
studied over 100 rehearsals, culling from the many recordings to release
a series of Out of Context LP’s to preserve Dino’s legacy. The first LP,
from the High Mayhem Festival in 2006, will be released at this concert.
Santistevan has also now taken up the baton to serve as Conductor so the
Conduction Lexicon will remain active and vibrant as evidenced by the
founding of The Folding Space Conduction Ensemble in 2024. This special
tribute brings together the two ensembles in celebration of Deane’s
legacy. It’s Carlos Santistevan, conductor; John Flax, text; David
Forlano, electronics/ sampling; Katie Harlow, cello; Rosie Hutchison,
violin; Marya Errin Jones, vox/electronics; Sean Kennedy, tuba; Keely
MacKey, cello; Alex Neville, electric bass; Joseph Sabella, vibes;
Catherine Sikora, sax/flute; Ben Tempchin, electric guitar; Alicia
Ultan, viola; and Milton Villarrubia III, drums/ percussion.
Dino’s Safe Haven Concert Series was created upon the passing in July
2021 of renowned sound designer, composer-improviser and long-time New
Mexico resident, J.A. Deane (“Dino”), who bequeathed a generous gift of
his “Safe Haven Tiny Home” to Outpost to support the work of like-minded
artists.

OUT OF CONTEXT - Live at the High Mayhem Festival 2006 LP -
High Mayhem Emerging Arts out of Santa Fe, NM is proud to release the
Out of Context - Live at High Mayhem Festival 2006 LP to document the
incredible legacy of the late JA “Dino” Deane in the preservation and
amplification of the Conduction® Lexicon developed by Lawrence “Butch”
Morris.
Working with Butch since 1985, Dino led the longest and deepest
exploration into the Conduction Lexicon ever with his work in Out of
Context. While Butch is credited with the Lexicon, he never had the
opportunity to develop the music with the same ensemble for 15 years as
Deane did. Dino was also instrumental in the finalization and release of
The Art Of Conduction: A Conduction Workbook to help preserve the
knowledge of Conduction. This LP documents OOC in full stride at the
raucous High Mayhem Festival in 2006. This is the first of 4-5 LP’s that
will be released to document the arc and evolution of this
groundbreaking ensemble.
The Out Of Context Ensemble was founded by Dino J.A. Deane in 1997.
Deane had been doing live-sampling in ensembles led by Butch Morris for
12 years (Conduction #3 Goya Time 1985 NYC). Conduction is a vocabulary
of signs and gestures transmitted by a conductor to an orchestra
providing instantaneous possibilities for altering or initiating
harmony, melody, rhythm, articulation, phrasing or form. Deane’s goal in
forming OOC was to have no goal. His intention was to work with an
ensemble slowly over time allowing them to develop a deep understanding
and skill with this revolutionary way of creating music. He also wanted
to incorporate an actor to explore the use of text for both rhythmic and
narrative possibilities. Over the course of 15 years Out Of Context
performed a real-time score to the classic 1932 silent film “Peter
Pan'', performed a concert at the Georgia O’Keeffe museum playing the
photographs of Edward Weston, performed a concert at the Outpost
Performance Space playing the book 1” = 25 Miles by Melody Sumner
Carnahan, recorded a score for the film The Burden Carriers by Pierre
Barrera, and created a sound design for Theater Grottesco’s play
Wenomadmen. OOC also released 4 critically acclaimed recordings on Xerx
and High Mayhem.

About Dino JA Deane:
Friday, July 23. 2021 at 11:14pm marked the peaceful passing of Dino
J.A. Deane. He transitioned in New Mexico with his dearest friends, Joe
Sabella and Katie Harlow, at his side. Born on February 16, 1950, Deane
was 71.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, this
multi-instrumentalist, sound-designer and conductor demonstrated a
unique and innovative approach to the world of music. Dino pioneered the
use of live-electronics in Indoor Life - a popular art/punk band from
San Francisco during the early 1980's. He played a trombone-controlled
synthesizer which emulated the sound of an electric guitar and employed
a tape-echo to create loops.
During the 1980’s Dino toured the world with Jon Hassell as the
electro-acoustic live-sampling percussionist. That collaboration
resulted in the ground-breaking Power Spot recording for ECM in 1986,
produced by Brian Eno & Daniel Lanois.
During that same period Dino became a close collaborator in Butch
Morris's real-time composition creations called Conduction®, and in 1995
co-produced Morris's epic 10-CD box set Testament, for New World
Records. Dino originated the term “live-sampling” - recording members of
an ensemble while in performance, manipulating the sound, then playing
back the recorded audio like an instrument. He is considered a master in
this field of performance.
Dino had an extensive background in composition for modern dance, having
created over fifty dance/music works with his life partner,
dancer/choreographer Colleen Mulvihill. He had an equally long history
creating sound designs for dramatic theater, working with writer
directors as diverse as Sam Shepard, Julie Hebert, Christoph Marthaler
and John Flax of Theater Grottesco.
Since 1995, Dino released several albums under his own name and directed
the ensemble Out of Context. More than 400 hours of his compositions are
being prepared for streaming release to preserve his legacy and his
contributions to improvisation.
In November 2020, Dino published Becoming Music - Conduction and
Improvisation as forms of QiGong, which is available through Bandcamp
and other stores.
